A note on Darwiche and Pearl

چکیده

It is shown that Darwiche and Pearl's postulates imply an interesting property, not noticed by the authors. In [?], Darwiche and Pearl propose postulates for iterated revisions, noted (R*1) to (R*6) and (C1) to (C4). In particular, the postulate (C3) reads: (C3) If Ψ • α |= µ, then (Ψ • µ) • α |= µ. It will be shown that, in the presence (R*1) to (R*6), (C1) and (C3) imply: (* *) If Ψ • α |= µ, then (Ψ • µ) • α ≡ Ψ • α.

Changing Conditional Beliefs Unconditionally

Although the AGM account of belief change tells us how to change unconditional beliefs, it fails to guide us in changing our conditional beliefs. That explains why, in the AGM account of belief change proper, a decent account of iterated belief change is not forthcoming. Darwiche and Pearl provide an account of changing conditional beliefs. We argue that the Darwiche-Pearl postulates are, on th...

Restrained Revision

As part of the justification of their proposed framework for iterated belief revision Darwiche and Pearl advanced a convincing argument against Boutilier’s natural revision, and provided a prototypical revision operator which fits into their scheme. We show that the Darwiche-Pearl arguments lead naturally to the acceptance of a smaller class of operators which we refer to as admissible. These a...

Admissible and Restrained Revision

As partial justification of their framework for iterated belief revision Darwiche and Pearl convincingly argued against Boutilier’s natural revision and provided a prototypical revision operator that fits into their scheme. We show that the Darwiche-Pearl arguments lead naturally to the acceptance of a smaller class of operators which we refer to as admissible. Admissible revision ensures that ...

Postulates for Conditional Belief Revision

In this paper, we present a scheme of postulates for revising epistemic states by condit ional beliefs. These postulates are supported mainly by fol lowing the specific, non-classical nature of conditionals, and the aim of preserving condi t ional beliefs is achieved by studying specific interactions between conditionals, represented properly by two relations. Because one of the postulates clai...
